Two of our key priorities this year as a PE department has been to ensure our children are knowledgebale and safe when using their bicycles in public and increasing our children's levels of resilience! We managed to address these two priorities to some degree in the first half term of the year. 16 of our children completed their Level 2 Bikeability award through Urban Vision. The children took part in a variety of on the road exercises with two qualified cycling instructors to ensure that the children could manoeuvre safely in any road situation, We also were able to increase the resilience of some of our Year 4, 5 and 6 children by taking part in a scheme ran by the Water Adventure Centre. The children took part for the first time in kayaking, canoeing and paddle boarding where their resilience was tested as they learned new skills and put them into practice... as well as having a great time!
We were very fortunate to be able to hunt down and secure tickets for the Manchester United Women vs Liverpool Women football match as well as the Super League Grand Final between Salford Red Devils and St Helens. Our girls football team members as well as some younger girls who will be playing for our team in future years attended the ladies football match which United won 2-0. It was a great experience to see a professional women's football match and very inspirational, giving our girls a target to aspire to! We were also able to take some children who have shown a commitment to our after school clubs to Salford Red Devil's first Super League Grand Final. It was an amazing experience for these children to soak in the fantastic atmosphere and experience competitive sport at the highest level.
We celebrated National Fitness Week with every class completing in class workout sessions and running a mile as well as lunchtime circuits ran by our Year 6 sports leaders. We also raised over £2000 for Coppafeel breast cancer charity through a sponsored colour run!
We've also had an extremely successful start to our football and netball seasons with victories for our boys football team in the first round of the Bill Hayhurst Cup and 3 victories and 1 draw in the first round of fixtures in the JP League. Our Netball team also won their first league game of the season 9-3, against a very good St Pauls team.
As well as all of that, we have entered festivals and events in the community such as: Year 1 football at The Cliff with the Manchester United Foundation, 2 Tag Rugby events with the Salford Red Devils Foundation, Sportshall Athletics, Tag Wrestling where we received bronze medals and the Eccles Hockey Cluster competition which we were very proud to win!
We have many events upcoming next term in the calendar already such as: Boys and Girls Futsal, Eccles Basketball competition, Gymnastics festival, Graystone Sports experience morning, Year 2 football with Manchester United Foundation, more football and netball matches, the start of our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Trampolining clubs as well as some special events that we will announce in due course!
