PE Curriculum

The PE Curriculum

Pupils are assigned two hours of PE per week which we develop six areas of activity; Dance, Gymnastics, Games, Swimming, Athletics and Outdoor and Adventurous activities. The PE Curriculum ensures the development of knowledge, skills and understanding of physical activity and healthy living through a continuous process of planning, practice, exploring, performing and evaluating, as well as ensuring children are provided with opportunities and experiences of a wide range of physical activity.

Swimming

To ensure children who have not completed the KS2 pass at the end of Yr4 attend catch up swimming lessons the following year. 15 pupils from yr5 identified as needing extra support in order to achieve KS2 pass by end of KS2. These children all now have a better chance of achieving the expected level by the end of yr6.

Early Years

At Foundation Stage activities provide children with the opportunity to explore, experiment and refine their social, interpersonal skills as well as gross-motor skills and hand-eye co-ordination. This is achieved through the use of a wide variety of equipment, apparatus and stimuli are employed to encourage the development of specific skills. (Movement, Balance and Co-ordination Skills).

Year 1 and Phase 2

Throughout Year 1 and Phase 2 children begin to build on their early experiences and start to develop skills further. They learn to refine their skills in throwing, catching and kicking balls and working co-operatively. They continue to develop co-ordination and balance and achieve greater control over their movements. They develop their visual and auditory awareness and begin to express themselves through movement and communicate ideas and feelings about their performance.

Phase 2 & 3

Throughout the rest of Phase 2 & 3 children build on their previous skills and knowledge through a broader PE Curriculum. Children learn and demonstrate the importance of teamwork, and are taught common skills and principles, rules and conventions for playing games with increasing complexity whilst taking part in competitive experiences. In Year 4 all children are given the opportunity to go to their local swimming baths.

Dance and Gymnastics

Thought-out gymnastics and dance children begin to sequence movements with greater complexity, and develop poise and control over their actions and equipment and apparatus. They respond creatively to stimuli and improve compositional work, performance and content. They become confident to evaluate their own and others performances, and reflect on how they can refine and improve their skills. Furthermore, children develop greater awareness of the importance of physical activity and the effects upon their body as well as healthy living.

Net/Wall

In these lessons, we look at outwitting our opponents, using attacking and defending techniques to get the past the opposition. Using different techniques, height, power, direction.

Athletics

In Athletics, children concentrate on developing their basic running, jumping and throwing techniques. They work in pairs/small groups and help/observe/coach each other they set challenges for the various activites and work out which is the best technique to use for the greater outcome. As in all athletic activities, children think about how to achieve the greatest possible speed, height, distance or accuracy. They will be able to run consistently and smoothly at different speeds, understand when to use these and demonstrate different combinations of jumps, showing control, coordination and consistency.
